Awesome Person of the Week: How a Woman Is Saving Dogs During Hurricane Dorian
Hurricane Dorian is wreaking havoc and destruction in the United States – and in the Bahamas, it’s really bad. During times like these, many people are worried about their family and loved ones and, of course, their pets. One woman has taken it upon herself to save as many homeless dogs as she could, and currently, she’s housing all of them.
A true superhero
Chella Phillips, who lives in Nassau, is a big animal lover and according to Today, she had taken almost 100 abandoned dogs into her home. She posted about it on Facebook, admitting that it wasn’t a comfortable situation at all but that she was just glad that all of the doggos are safe and sound.
Those who saw what Phillips was doing made some donations to help her take care of all the dogs. Phillips appreciated it very much, thanking the donors in her post and saying that the money was much needed to take care of some of the dogs. “I managed to bring some less fortunate ones and I really appreciate some of you donating for crates. I really needed it for the scared ones and the sick ones. Thank you!”
Saving every dog in sight
On how she found all the dogs, she told NBC News that she simply started “picking them up and grabbing them and bringing them home.” Phillips is no stranger when it comes to taking care of stray animals. She takes care of dogs with the help of her brother with no aid from outside organizations. She has made a career out of finding homes for dogs for 15 years now. With the storm coming, it was more important to her than ever before to make sure that she saves as many dogs as possible. She says that she doesn’t want to put the dogs out on the street because they don’t deserve that – and we wholeheartedly agree.

Making some sacrifices
Ever since Phillips’ Facebook post went viral, many people have donated to the cause and she’s gotten nearly $100,000 so far. Phillips admits that her home is quite a mess, but that she doesn’t mind it one little bit. “I can’t even get one step without a dog being on my foot, but I’m not complaining because everybody is safe.”

Dogs are filling Phillips’ entire house.

Phillips added that some people have already reached out to her about adopting some of the dogs once all the chaos is over. This is ultimately all she wants. Her main goal is to get the dogs adopted off the island since stray dogs are a big problem there. According to Phillips, there are about 65,000 homeless dogs who roam the streets. All of them are hungry and sometimes even abused and sick.

All these dogs want is a loving home.

Pets are a responsibility
What Phillips is doing is so great. We just wish that she had more people to help her and perhaps even take in some of the dogs to look after them until all of the chaos is over. But we’re grateful that she’s saved so many dogs. It’s true what she said – they don’t deserve to be on the streets. And it’s so not okay that so many pets get abandoned by their owners. Hopefully, this will create more awareness.
