11 Unexpected Effects of Yoga Teacher Training

There are certain things that you expect from a yoga teacher training (YTT). You expect to get stronger, both physically and mentally; you expect to learn enough to be able to teach yoga yourself; and, you expect to get to know some like-minded people that will make this yoga teacher training all the more fun. (Those like-minded people might even be so kind to contribute to an article like this – thank you guys!)

Then there are the things that you did not see coming- changes that you did not expect at all. Something that happened without you really noticing.

1. You sit cross legged everywhere, all the time

Now crossing my legs while sitting is how I feel best.

“Once I loathed sitting cross legged. It is now my go-to posture for just about any situation: movie theater, dinner table, car rides…you get the idea” – L.

“It is much better for my breathing” – I.

2. The longer the yoga practice, the better

At first you are unsure if you can hold up with the long practices. Then it is hard “trying to imagine life without two long yoga practices a day” – V.

3. You become more aware

“I also have a new perceptive of things. I am much more self-aware of my body and what I eat, also more aware of my body sensations” – E.

“I barely eat meat now” – F.

4. You become more creative

“I realized that I´m more creative” – I.

“Much more creative!” – E.

“I seem to have found my creative flare” – F.

Theory states that people are either left-brained or right-brained, meaning that one side of their brain is dominant. If you are mostly analytical and methodical in your thinking, it’s suggested that you are left-brained. If you tend to be more creative or artistic, you’re thought to be right-brained. 5. Suddenly, you like meditation

Meditation has become an integrated part of my day.

“I like to sit and meditate. And miss it, if I don´t do it – although I couldn´t sit for five minutes in the yoga teacher training” – I.

6. You will find the need to teach yoga

Some people go to a yoga teacher training to become a teacher and others never intend to teach. During your training period, A LOT can change.

“I also never actually thought I’d teach after completing just one yoga teacher training.” – F.

7. You see the world with new eyes

“I´m more aware, more present, and see how most of the world is so negative” – B.

“The yoga teacher training has made me become more aware of just how negative some people can be. I really notice when people moan about the smallest of things, or make negative assumptions about the future, causing them to have fear or worry, rather than just take each day as it comes. I’m trying to encourage others (and myself sometimes) to not let thoughts take over, but to deal with the facts and focus on the positives in life” – F.

8. Your priorities change

What was important before, doesn´t matter as much now.

“I’m much less materialistic” – F.

9. Suddenly life just seems so different

Now, I live in the here and now, and my temperament has changed.

“I find that my patience and tolerance has expanded. What generally irritated me “before” is hardly any afterthought now” – L.

“When things get shitty, I just take a deep breath and it all seems to be better afterwards” – E.

“Life is better. I’m happier being me. I have more love for everyone and have better skills to cope with the crazy world around us” – D.

“Even though I have no idea what the future holds, for the first time in my life I’m just not too worried about it” – F.

10. You make friends for life

I expected to meet some lovely people I could spend the month with. However, it was much more than that.

In my yoga teacher training, I met some of my absolute favourite people. I found people that I could talk to endlessly about my interests and dreams, share bizarre meditation experiences with, and that would support me (and I them) through the journey.

I never imagined how close I could get to people in just a month and every single one of them makes me a better person than I was before I met them. And even though we are very far apart now, they all have a special place in my heart.

11. And finally, you realize that your journey is just beginning

“The need to go on a million trainings was unexpected” – B.

I came out of my training as a completely new person, trying to figure out how to go back home, as everything felt so different.

I act in a different way, I move in a different way, but most importantly I think and feel in a different way. I see the world with new eyes. And it is so beautiful.

Your yoga teacher training will make you a better version of yourself. And more importantly, it will encourage you to always strive to grow and become an even better person every single day, for the rest of your life.

It is a truly transformational experience and one that you will never forget.

“I feel like we have a super power” – B.

Graduated, we are here to change the world! I hope you join us one day.

Great stuff, Pála! The “friends for life” thing hits home for me … I now have six “moon sisters” (as the only guy in our YTT class, I’m the “sun brother”) 🙂 We still get together often, even though it’s been 7 months since we graduated. Definitely a benefit that I wasn’t necessarily expecting!
