How Do I Set Health and Fitness Resolutions that Will Stick?

It’s that time of year again – December is usually the month we reflect on what we’ve achieved throughout the past year and start to focus on goals we’d like to set for the new year. But with the new year comes a LOT of optimism (usually) so we tend to set health and fitness resolutions for ourselves that don’t end up being very realistic.

I received a question on how to make health and fitness new year’s resolutions stick, and honestly, the answer is super simple:

  • Make your fitness “appointments” non-negotiable. Put it in your calendar on a day or two you want to make it happen and make it as non-negotiable as brushing your teeth.
  • If meal planning isn’t your jam, try to make your takeout from places that sell real whole foods.
  • Wear clothes that fit you well. Stop giving in to the false hope that those pants from 12 years ago should still fit you. That habit is only gonna make you feel worse about yourself.
  • Make sure your routine is sustainable. Do you ever start a new thing in January only to give up on it a week later? Don’t promise yourself you’ll wake up at 6 a.m. to meditate every morning if that already sounds dreadful to you. Start out with a micro-resolution or commitment and work up to something more.

Setting small goals that you know you’ll be able to achieve will provide you with enough confidence to set even bigger goals – and reach those too. A rule of thumb here is to not overwhelm yourself with goals so big that you end up with knots in your stomach every time you think about them. Small goals will eventually lead to your bigger goals, so just get started with the small things and take it from there.
