Are You Gonna Drink That Coffee?

Caffeine is the opiate of the masses. Whether it’s me drinking my tea in the morning or a severely stressed college student chugging down coffee after coffee: almost everyone I know is attached to caffeine in some way. This isn’t to say it’s always a bad thing. Caffeine is sometimes great – you get a little burst in green tea, chocolate, and (yes) in those energy drinks. It keeps you awake long past when you should have fallen asleep and helps you focus when you can’t find the energy to stare at your notes for one second longer.

I am not a coffee addict. Say it after me: We are not coffee addicts. We just… enjoy it.

I won’t ask a friend: are you planning on drinking that cup of coffee? Even if they have a steaming cup of coffee in front of them and all it’s doing is getting cold. That would be silly and unnecessary. Actually, if we’re being honest – that’s a lie. I would absolutely ask that question. Coffee, whether not I like to admit it, has made somewhat of a comeback in my life (and in the blogs of all of the exercise junkies that I follow on Instagram). I don’t drink it every morning, but the couple mornings where I spend 30 minutes sipping my coffee along with breakfast are some of the best in recent memory. My belief is that as long as you aren’t abusing caffeine, it can be a way to be mindful – taking time to sip a drink and closing your eyes to enjoy the scent. [Note: I am not fantasising right now]

I am planning on drinking that coffee on the counter. I’m additionally planning on drinking the free cup of coffee that the conference is offering for members. Sure I might be getting slightly more addicted to caffeine by the day – but the benefits of focus and wakefulness (so long as I’m not quivering and shaking from withdrawal) seem to far outweigh the costs. Not only is it delicious, it’s also one of those little things that makes each day something to look forward to. So if you happen to have a free cup of freshly brewed coffee lying around: pass it over.

I do find I enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, mostly because of the ritual. Of course, it tastes good, too, but I never wake up thinking I need coffee…and every now and then I take a few days off just to make sure I’m not relying on it. 🙂 But like I said, it’s more about the ritual, so it’s just as satisfying for me to make chai in the mornings (it just takes a little longer) or even just lemon water.

Love this! Cold brew coffee is my new thing. Has it caught on in Europe? Or maybe it started there, I dunno 🙂

I see a little bit of the cold brew around here 🙂 But I’m a huge warm coffee fan, though maybe with summer – we’ll see. heh
