Determine Your Own Story

Determine your own story.

You shouldn’t wear that.
You should smile more.
Why are you doing it that way? Do it this way.
You’re not working hard enough.
You’re working too hard.
You’re fat, lose some weight.
You’re too skinny.
You’re not attractive.
You’re only getting ahead because of your looks.
You’ can’t do that.
You’re not that nice of a person.
You’re not fun to hang out with.

The amount of opinions we hear from other people, telling us who we are and what we should be doing is astounding. Every single day, friends, family, co-workers, strangers, magazines, and t.v. shows seem to decide who we are and how we should live our lives. There are as many opinions as there are people; meaning billions.

Allowing someone else’s opinion of you to control your life is giving them your personal power on a silver platter.

Even as far back as high school, I had so-called “friends” who would make me feel like I wasn’t worthy of their time or friendship. They made me feel like there was something wrong with my personality.

Later, I got into an abusive relationship with someone who wanted to decide what I should eat, what I should spend my money on, where I should work, who I should spend time with, how I felt, and who I should be. After I broke up with him, I began traveling and dated guys who made me feel like I was only a body to have sex with, or someone to validate their confidence.

As I’ve gotten older and gotten to know myself, I’ve finally found the personal power that so many people stripped away from me. I stood on my own two feet and said, “this is who I am, and I’m proud of that.”

We constantly seek out validation from other people. We seek acceptance, and ask other people if who we are is okay with them. I don’t care if the Queen of England thinks you’re rude, or Cosmopolitan magazine thinks you’re bad in bed.

Ponder this question for a moment: What is my personal story?

It’s pretty hard to write your own story when you don’t listen to your own inner voice. Are you going to be the author of your own book? Or will you allow ghost writers to put the words in there for you? Determine your own story.

It’s time you silence all the voices out there and listen to the only one that matters: your own.
