Bad Yogi Book Review: ‘Yoga Wisdom – Warrior Tales Inspiring You On and Off Your Mat’ by Stephanie Spence
“Yoga Wisdom” by Stephanie Spence came to me at the perfect time. I was feeling lost, not connecting to my yoga practice as I usually did, and just generally looking for inspiration. What I got was an offer to review this book.
What’s it all about?
Stephanie Spence trusts her readers with the story of how she left an abusive marriage and healed herself with yoga. She became ‘Yoga Road Trip Girl’, driving through the USA and Canada, practicing yoga with a different teacher every day and video-interviewing them for her blog. But this book isn’t just about Stephanie’s journey. 114 yoga teachers are given the platform to tell their story of how they found their yoga practice and what it means to them. They are all different, but they have one thing in common: Every single one of them sees yoga as more than exercise.
This book celebrates yoga as a lifestyle and as a guide when times get hard. Stephanie isn’t afraid of admitting that her life isn’t perfect, and by doing that, she’s giving the reader permission to also lead a non-perfect life. Yoga is there to support us, to pick us up, to strengthen us and to hold us. It’s not a magical cure. And that’s ok.
“Yoga Wisdom” is a memoir, an inspirational tale, a success story, a quick pick-me-up, or an immersive read. You can flip it open at random and let the story on the page in front of you inspire you. Or you can follow Stephanie on her journey. It is vulnerable, yet hopeful; personal, yet inclusive. It is a book about love, the love for yourself and the love for your family. Your biological family and your spiritual family.
My personal take away
So, did this book inspire me? Not in the way I expected it to, if I’m being completely honest. I am still in a yoga rut, not practicing nearly as much as I would like. But, after reading this book, I am at peace with that. At this point in my life, I need less asana and more self-love. And when I’m ready, my mat will be there to take me back. And this realization is truly inspiring.
