5 Supplements Erin Motz Swears By

Supplements are, for the most part, unnecessary in my opinion. I mean, I much prefer getting my nutrients from real foods, but sometimes a little boost is nice. Especially when you’re not a doctor and totally unsure where to start, choosing the right ones can be super overwhelming.

Plus, buying into every “hack” and “secret” to optimal health can run up your tab pretty quickly, so I like to keep my arsenal of supplements pretty lean and only take the most useful things for my body.

On top of that, supplements don’t have to exclusively refer to vitamins and things that come in small jars from the Vitamin Shoppe or something. A supplement is simply a thing that enhances another thing when added to it. Let’s keep that in mind when looking for ways to enhance our health and our lifestyle. It’s not about expense or trends, it’s about what works for YOU.

Here’s what I personally swear by:

1. A high quality probiotic. <$15 for 2 month supply

I’ve been taking a probiotic every day for  few years now and I swear it’s transformed my digestion and immunity. I change it up every year, but I took PB8 for a while and now I take a French brand from the pharmacy whose name I don’t remember! It’s a pretty nondescript bottle. Each runs less than $15 a bottle and that’s good for 2 months. That’s a pretty good bargain!

2. Plant based protein powder. ($27 for the brand I mention)

I’m not a protein freak and when you’re eating a balanced diet, you’re likely getting the protein your body needs. But when I have an intense workout or am looking to add a little muscle, I supplement with a scoop of Sun Warrior Natural protein powder. It has a funky taste alone, but blends in nicely to a smoothie with berries and vanilla extract!

3. Thieves oil. (~$40 & will last FOREVER)

I swear this stuff works miracles. I typically don’t fully buy into the strength of essential oils, but this changed my mind. I have a bag of the (pricey, but worth it) Young Living Thieves Lozenges on hand every time I travel and they keep my colds brief when they happen.

The story behind this oil goes back to the 12th century when 4 thieves were robbing the bodies of people who died of the bubonic plague. The thieves never got sick though, so a judge put out a warrant that said if they turn themselves in and tell their secret to not catching the plague, they could walk free. Turns out their secret was stuffing their clothes with herbs like rosemary, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, and lemon. Fascinating, right?!

4. Omega 3,6,9 fatty acids. ($15-$45 depending on brand)

We all know the benefits of getting enough fatty acids in our diet, but as someone who doesn’t eat a load of oil or fish, I just feel better adding this into the daily rotation. It’s great for balancing hormones, fertility, and joint health, so this is a winner all around. I use Barlean’s and love it.

5. Papaya enzymes. (<$10 for 180 tablets)

Okay, so this is a little known one but SO FANTASTIC! I don’t take them daily, but they are the BEST remedy for an upset stomach or when your digestion feels out of whack. They’re tasty and instantly settle your stomach when you don’t feel your best. Make sure the brand you get has papain and bromelain in it!

Over to you! What are your go-to supplements? Do you believe in them or not so much?

I too have had excellent results taking a daily probiotics. More notably, a few of months ago my mom, who is in her 70s, got a UTI. The antibiotics which cleared the UTI also cleared out the beneficial bacteria from her digestive tract and allowed C-Diff to flourish. C-Diff infections can be a nuisance or deadly. Now (a little late) my mom’s doctors have prescribed over-the-counter probiotics to help bring back the healthy bacteria. Medical studies have shown the benefits of taking probiotics when antibiotics are first introduced and for a few weeks following. Unfortunately, my mom is trying to play catch up because she didn’t take probiotics until the C-Diff infection came back a second time. We have found LEAN Nutraceuticals’ Probiotic MD1550 from Amazon to have a good variety of bacteria strains which have been included in medical studies and called out in mom’s doctor’s orders. I’m hoping that my regular use of probiotics will prevent me from getting into mom’s situation.
