It’s time I come clean: I wear makeup when I do yoga. There! I said it! Not so much when I’m at the gym or at home by myself, but anytime a camera is on, there’s makeup there too. Granted, I don’t wear a bunch of it, but I still enjoy the boost of confidence I get when I have it on.

My hair might always be a mess (no secret there, haha), but my makeup manages to stay put even under the heat of studio lights, moving through all kinds of yoga flows, and working out for hours at a time.

For those of you who also find yourselves wearing makeup through a workout or yoga class, here’s some of my favorite brands that stay put…

Quick note: I ended up having a bit of a dual conversation below regarding animal cruelty & cosmetics. As I listed items below, I did some research about the brands I suggest regarding their cruelty free status.

1. Smashbox Camera Ready BB cream in Light.
I’ve been using this BB cream for YEARS and I love that it gives me even coverage that’s light and doesn’t “feel” like I have makeup on. It also has zinc and titanium with a pretty decent SPF, so I love wearing it to the beach, too.

Let’s talk about animal testing (L.T.A.A.T.): I know they weren’t technically cruelty free as of a few years ago, but did some digging today. I guess there was some confusion over their cruelty-free status because they’re owned by Estee Lauder which does test on animals “where required by law.” I found this as of 2017:

“Smashbox is cruelty-free and always has been. We are a PETA-certified, cruelty-free brand. We don’t test our products or ingredients on animals, and we don’t ask any other companies to test our products or ingredients on our behalf.

We require our suppliers to certify that the raw materials used in the manufacturing of our products are not tested on animals. We also don’t sell in China and never have.”

2. Sephora Retractable Eyebrow Pencil in Nutmeg Brown.
I LOVE this pencil. It’s affordable, it’s waterproof, and you can apply it lightly so your brows don’t look too “done” up. I wear this about 90% of the time I film and it’s always the last thing that wears off in the day, if at all.

L.T.A.A.T.: Ehhh. They DO sell in China which requires companies to test on animals. So I guess they don’t test on animals in the US, but they do in China? A little confusing. I wish this stuff was more clear! :/

3. Clinique High Impact Mascara in Black.
I’m somewhat of a mascara connoisseur 😉 I’ve seriously tried almost every kind there is in all the price ranges, and this is my favorite for many reasons. It stays put, the brush is perfect, and most importantly for me: it doesn’t irritate my eyes. Love it.

L.T.A.A.T.: UGH, I hate myself a little for this because Clinique is known for having to test on animals. My eyes and skin are super sensitive and this is one of few brands that don’t burn my eyes, so I keep coming back to it, but I’m still on the hunt for a cruelty-free version that works for me.

4. Nars bronzer in Laguna // Blush in Orgasm
These pigments work really well for my skin tone and are buildable if you want more color. They also won’t fade during the day, so once you apply, they stay put.

L.T.A.A.T.: As of 2017, Nars is cruelty-free!! That’s the good news. The bad news is that their parent company, Shiseido, is not. So Nars doesn’t test on animals, but their “boss” does. At least that’s how I’m understanding it.

5. e.l.f Mineral Infused Facial Primer in Clear.
This is one of the best beauty finds I’ve discovered in the last year. It’s only $6 and makes a fantastic base before I apply my BB cream. Super highly recommend!

L.T.A.A.T.: Not only is e.l.f. cruelty-free, but they’re certified vegan, too! Win all around!

Over to you! Do you workout or do yoga with makeup? What are your favorite cruelty-free beauty brands?
