Star Wars Yoga
Is it just coincidence that Yoda and Yoga are so similar sounding? I think not.
I quickly admit that I am a Star Wars nerd. And I am very proud of being a Star Wars nerd. I always thought the writing and symbolism of the movies to be very profound. But it wasn’t until very recently that I became aware that Yoda was not only a Jedi master, but he must have also been a 500-hour Yoga instructor. Listening to him, I hear “yoga instructor”. See for yourself as he explains the Force to Luke Skywalker:
Yoda: A Jedi’s strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will…
Luke: Is the dark side stronger?
Yoda: No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.
Luke: But how am I to know the good side from the bad?
Yoda: You will know… when you are calm, at peace, passive. A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, NEVER for attack.
Can’t you hear your favorite Yoga instructor say these words? Maybe not in this same format – but the essence would be the same. Take the first couple of lines for example. Beware of anger, fear, and aggression: it is the dark side. It is easy to be “sucked in” to rhetoric. And once you are on that path, it is most difficult to retreat. If you are not careful, you can travel so far down that path that you become a person that you would not want to be. If going this direction turns you into a person that you didn’t want to be, why go that way? We go that way because it is easy.
So what do we do? We acknowledge that the easy road may look better, but it leads to illusions and nothing more. The other path may be more difficult, but it is always in struggle that we gain knowledge. Going this way we will have the opportunity to listen to “our inner Yoda”. We can visualize his pointy green ears and his wise and calm face as we strive to find balance. He will tell us “Yin and Yang exist alone, they cannot”. “Look inward and know the strength to resist the path to anger, fear, and aggression, you have”.
Once you have accepted this, you will be well on your way to became a Jedi Yogi. May the Force be with you. ~ Namaste
