Q&A: What’s the best black legging?

The best black legging is a staple we all need in our lives. Whether you practice yoga or you go to the gym, this is a necessity for everyone.

I’m not exaggerating when I tell you I’ve tried pretty much every legging brand I’ve ever seen out there. I have no shortage of options in my drawer, but a few brands really stand out.

In today’s Q&A, I’ll tell you my top 5 favorite pairs from least to most favorite EVER.

Also just want to point out that each of the ones I’m talking about I purchased myself. No company “bought” us to say any of this. I’m completely honest about what pants I don’t like and for what reasons, as well as what I do like, so all opinions are my own.

Enjoy!

Over to you! What are you go-to black leggings? Have you ever worn any of the brands I mentioned here?

Thanks for the review, Erin, and here are a couple of brands you may not have tried before; both make what are for me the best leggings, and also happen to be ethically sound companies, using sustainable materials.

Bamboo Clothing: their black leggings come in a choice of fabric thickness as well as waistband shape. I tend to opt for the colours, though ^_^
Gossypium: they make your leggings to your specified length after you’ve ordered them, so their delivery times are consequently longer. They offer a variety of designs, including a super high-waist legging.

Voila! If I want black leggings that I can slip into in the morning and feel comfortable in whether I’m just taking it easy, in need of a “bottom” layer to warm up a favourite dress, working out, practising yoga (or any combination of the above), these are my top 2. ^_^

I got the girlfriend collective ones during their promotion too! I LOVE them, but my only issue is that I’ve worn and washed them so many times that the fabric is starting to pill. I haven’t noticed the “crotch” issue, but I do have really short legs so (like most pants I wear) they sometimes scrunch up at the bottom. A great legging, nonetheless!

Ironically, I wear my Lululemons for “everyday” pants, but I bought a bunch of Athleta back in teacher training & they are still going strong (as are the Lulus, but Athleta takes more of a beating in classes). Thanks for posting! _/|\_

I love hearing what other peoples favorite black leggings are! It makes me want to go out and buy them all.

My new favorites are actually a brand made near me! The company is called “Greater than Sports” and all their clothes are designed and sewn in Ballston Spa, NY (near Saratoga). I just purchased a pair of black crops and a pair of long black leggings during their sample sale (each was only $15!!) and I LOVE them! I’ve practically lived in them since they arrived. I also have a pair of their patterned leggings. They are all SUPER comfortable AND pass the squat test. The only downside I’ve noticed is that I can tend to see underwear lines more frequently than with my lululemon pair. They’re great for yoga, going to the gym, and wearing out. You should definitely check them out!! Though I imagine the shipping from here to France might be a bit on the pricey side πŸ™‚

I used to love lululemon and I honestly have pants that are 10 years old that I still love and wear often – they were the best!! But every time I have tried them in the past few years they just don’t have the same feel and consequently just don’t do it for me any more. My faves of the past few years are Lucy.

This was a fun top 5. Thanks for your input. Love the lulu high waisted wunder under. It’s my go-to for teaching and for style under a tunic. My huge problem with many brands is the elastic band right at the top of the waist seam like Onzie has. I prefer a more “panel” waist with the elastic lower at the mid point of the hip line and a soft extra top piece that fits like a compression tight but still gives whe. You fold forward. Is Under Armour like that? And what other brands have you tried with the top “panel” piece? Over to u!

Thanks Erin – I love my old lulus too but I have a new number one – Zella! Beautiful thick matt black leggings and half the price of lulu. Athleta are also awesome!

Ps looking forward to the eyeliner tutorial!

Lululemon is hands-down the best! They last FOREVER and never get a nasty sweat smell like other leggings do. I also really like 90 degree leggings and you can get then at Marshall’s/TJMaxx for really cheap! They have a bigger crotch area sometimes, depending on your body type, but that doesn’t really bother me that much. I’ve not heard of some of the other brands you mentioned, so I’ll have to try them! Thanks Erin!

I have to say I felt a bit disappointed that Lulus were #1 in your top, I know literally everybody swears by them, but for some reason I just don’t love them. The one’s I got more recently have this cheap feel fabric that looks also very bright, like when a stretchy piece of clothing doesn’t properly fit, but for this one pair in particular I even sized up to help a bit with the squat test and see through situation so probably quality went downhill at some point. My current favorite is the Manduka High Line Legging, the fabric is super soft yet able to provide great support, the only downside is that their black is more like a muted black/grayish color.

Thanks for the reviews! I am a big fan of Lucy. They have short, tall, regular lengths, and high waist options plus they wear really well. I also think that their sizing is a little more forgiving for those of us who are a little heavier weight. I have many other brands but like the comfort of my Lucy brand leggings over some of the others. The black ones (in many different styles or cut) are simple enough that I often wear them out with a longer shirt or sweater. I have a few pair of Onzie and found them to be as you described. The patterns can not be beat but the fit is too small and odd. The waistband always cuts in and rolls too.

I love the videos and appreciate the time you put into them. Keep up the great work!

I agree completely. I can’t find ANYTHING better than Lulu pants. I’d like to but it just isn’t happening. Nothing compares, esp in fit and flatter! I’m NOT a tiny yogi and I hear from a lot of people, they only fit small sizes! but as far as their pants go, that just isn’t true!

Hey!!! So I 100% agree- the old lulus are amazing! I have a pair from 4 years ago and I love them.
I too have a pair of girlfriend collective leggings that I got from their campaign and I love mine. They fit great on me. I’m very pear-shaped with a lot of junk in my trunk and don’t have the weird wrinkling issue.

Thank you Erin!! This was a great Q&A – always fun to hear what leggings people like – it’s surprisingly hard to find a GOOD pair of solid black leggings. I agree that the old LLL Wonder Unders are comfy and flattering. The newer ones… not so much. Athleta has a really nice, flattering high waisted legging – Salutation – I think its called. I also like some of the Beyond Yoga and Zella, too. Someone mentioned Manduka, so I’m totally checking that one out next πŸ™‚ Thank you again for creating this Q&A. Super fun!! LOVE your classes and teaching style btw πŸ˜‰

My favorite leggings are from Silver Icing. They are never sheer, have amazing wicking properties, smooth you out, never pill, fade or stretch out, no muffin top or camel toe. They are super soft and I live in mine πŸ˜€ )
In solid colors I personally like the Victory legging as I like the lower waistband ( still high waisted but not as high as the Epic leggings which have a higher band that can be worn up or folded over Those are a staple item but every moth they also release a new print mostly because they sell things never wear out so new styles and prints are necessary to feed the legging addiction
Silver, Icing is Canadian but they ship internationally . Prints are amazing too and I would love to send you a pair to try!!
Disclaimer- I love them so much that they are the reason I became a personal stylist for the company ( I’m an accountant by day with a weakness for fashion. I was buying way to many things at full retail so signed on to get a discount.

It’s like you read my mind with this Q&A! Thanks for sharing your faves, I haven’t tried any of those brands but do have a Lululemon yoga mat which is the comfiest and best quality I’ve ever used, so I might check out their outfits.
My favourite leggings have all come from an Australian chain store called Cotton On – they’re cheap but have a decent density and come in a range of prints as well as plain black. I just bought a black pair with some funky geometric mesh inserts (similar to the Lorna Jane styles but way cheaper!) and they’re the comfiest things ever. If you’re ever in Australia, definitely check them out!

I bought a pink cropped lululemon legging. my first “REAL” yoga gear I LOVE THEM. I cannot wear dark panties or a pattern that will show as it will shadow through. so I know this and don’t. I was climbing over a fence and they caught and put a hole kind of back of thigh close to the bum…I still wear them. I got them in 2015. I wear them with my favorite tie-died Keep Calm and Dance oversized T shirt ALL THE TIME. I want to be a hippie when I grow up. my other favorite and yes, pricey are the fabletics. my cheap favorites that I get at my big box store are the Earth Yoga. well made and comfy. I just wish I could find a dressier yoga top that fits consistently. it’s either too tight. and going up a size it hangs on me wrong. I’ll stick with basic tank tops and my Bad Yogi tanks . your eyeliner was On Point! πŸ˜‰

One Step Ahead 200 leggings are awesome. They are soft, they are thick and they are tight. They are plain – so they are perfect to be worn everyday when not doing sporty things. They do start to do that broken white elastic thing after awhile, but in their defence I wear them every day and they cannot last forever. They are more pricey and they are only sold in the states πŸ™ but I love love love them.

Thank you so much, Erin! I think I am going to have to breakdown and check out LuLu. I have tried to resist for so long, but your Q&A and several of my friends SWEAR by them.
I also love Athleta and Old Navy for leggings!

I feel the same way about the Lululemon ones! Some of their more “athletic” ones are veryyy tight and uncomfy when I first got them. Hands down the super comfy soft cotton “naked” ones from Lululemon are the best! I could live in them. Recently I’ve purchased several pairs of of Athleta leggings and I have to say they are awesome!! Also a little less pricy. I definitely recommend giving them a try.

I would like to give some suggestions and hope you will like them . They are the best suited brands I wear , MICHI Medusa capri and leggings are my favourite to be worn in summer or hot climatic condition because of their sweat wicking quality .Also you must try onzie raw seam for winters .
