Natural Deodorant Roundup & Review

The best natural deodorant exists and I think I’ve found it! Here’s the deal: I’ve been using Schmidt’s Deodorant for a few years and have really loved it, as has my husband. So you can understand my disappointment when recently it stopped working for me. I notice it doesn’t work against odors anymore (could be breastfeeding too– I know your chemistry changes due to hormones) and it was leaving behind a LOT of residue on my skin and clothes. Plus, I noticed some irritation even with the sensitive formula.

I started doing some research about other brands and you all gave me so many tips on which ones to try! I ordered a bunch and took them all for a test drive so you don’t have to 😉

Here’s my experience with each and everything you’d wanna know.

Quick notes:

– I’m not a big sweater but feeling overly wet armpits drives me insane
– I’m always super conscious about body odor, so that’s my #1 req for deo
– I’m breastfeeding so I’m being particular with ingredients
– I’m rating from 1-5 stars ⭐
– None of these were gifted or sponsored

In order of WORST to BEST, here goes…

lume review bad yogi
Lume Deodorant Lavender Sage
Price: $16 for 2.2oz
Scent: like you just spent the weekend at Burning Man in a lavender flower crown
Effectiveness: ⭐

I passionately disliked this and it’s the most expensive one I bought! There’s also tons of seemingly unnecessary plastic in the packaging. The container is wrapped in plastic paper that you peel off in tiny shreds because it’s impossible to remove. Once you remove that, there’s a suuuuper strong sticker over the “stick” of the deodorant because turns out, it’s not a stick but a paste. You turn the wheel at the bottom to squeeze the paste out of three holes in the top. It’s goopy and thick and altogether unpleasant to apply. It also didn’t work very well for me. It didn’t control moisture or odors. It says for armpits and private parts but I didn’t venture anywhere outside my armpits with this, haha. And get this: someone from the Bad Yogi community had this and messaged Lume about it not working for her. They told her she had to treat her clothing with special laundry detergent so it wouldn’t transfer. HARD NO from me.

Then there’s the scent which was a little nauseating to me. It kind of reminded me of BO right out of the container but with a tinge of lavender. So I guess if you want to smell like a hippie, this is an obvious choice!

smarty pits review bad yogi
Smarty Pits Coconut Mango
Price: $13 for 2.9oz
Scent: I found this too sweet, but it’s not bad
Effectiveness: ⭐⭐⭐

Honestly, this one worked pretty well, but the scent bothered me! I don’t know why I disliked it so much, but I really did. Since it worked decently well, I think I’d give it another try in a different scent, but the others still win out for me. It’s a solid stick though a liiiiittle pasty.

Cons: I noticed more moisture using this one than the others and like I over-emphasized already, the scent was too sweet. It’s also a little more expensive compared to my favorites, so I’d still reach for those first if given the choice.

schmidts deodorant review bad yogi
Schmidt’s Sensitive Skin Coconut Pineapple
Price: $9 for 2.6oz
Scent: SO GOOD. one of my favorites!
Effectiveness: ⭐⭐⭐

Like I said, I was happy with this for the past few years until it just stopped working for me! I personally loved the sensitive skin formulas and this is my favorite scent. It’s a solid stick deodorant and the sensitive formula is smooth when you apply it which is rare with a lot of natural stick deodorants. I never had an issue until recently with irritation, and even though it suddenly stopped working, I still think it’s a good quality natural deodorant. So I’d still recommend!

kopari review bad yogi
Kopari Fragrance Free for Sensitive Skin
Price: $14 for 2 oz
Scent: vaguely of coconut but mostly unscented
Effectiveness: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I typically hate rollerball deodorants, but actually ended up loving this one. I was also skeptical about getting the unscented, but it was amazing. Don’t judge me, but the first day I used it I taught powerful classes in it and went about my day. I forgot to shower until the next morning and had zero stinkyness. I applied twice in the day (I often do this). It goes on wet but dries insanely fast and didn’t leave any residue on my clothes or skin. I have sensitive skin too and this didn’t burn or irritate me.

Cons: Pricey AND it has propylene glycol! I didn’t realize this until after I bought it which made me give them the side eye for marketing themselves as a healthy deodorant. This is one of the ingredients we should avoid so I was super disappointed to see it in there! I found this article which was a good read and they said: “The petroleum-based ingredient propylene glycol is present in many antiperspirants and deodorants. It’s the ingredient that gives deodorant a slick consistency so we can slather it on our skin. Bad news is that in large quantities it can do damage to the central nervous system, the heart and the liver. To be fair, this is like saying that broccoli in large doses is lethal, but no one would ever eat that much anyway, so it’s a moot point. The amount of propylene glycol used in the average stick of deodorant is probably completely safe, but it’s worth mentioning.” So take that for whatever it’s worth!

native deodorant review bad yogi
Native Deodorant in Coconut Vanilla
Price: $12 for 2.65oz
Scent: this smells sooo good! the perfect balance of coconut so it’s a little beachy but not overly sweet
Effectiveness: ⭐⭐⭐⭐This worked fantastic but I’m giving this 4/5 stars because it irritated my skin just a bit, especially if applied too close to shaving. However, I really liked how clean and simple the ingredients are and the very cool bonus of including a probiotic which is all the rage for skin health these days. I also loved the smell! It’s a really good balance. The coconut doesn’t make you smell like sunscreen and the vanilla isn’t too sweet. I’d love to try their other scents! I’ll get more when we head back to the US in April. I also give this one kudos for being the best value out of the ones I tried.Cons: it caused me some mild irritation after shaving, but didn’t last.

lavanila deodorant review bad yogi
LAVANILA in Pure Vanilla
Price: $9 for the 1 oz // $14 for full size 2.2 oz
Scent: like a masculine spicy vanilla
Effectiveness: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A surprise 5/5 stars! I was dreading this one at first because I honestly didn’t love how it smelled. It’s super strong in the package, kind of like traditional mens deodorants are, but mixed with vanilla. But once applied, it dies down a LOT and I hardly noticed it at all. It also works extremely well. I didn’t notice any body odor all day and that included a trip to the gym AND filming for Bad Yogi Studio. Pretty impressive!

Cons: I found it pricey and the scent put me off at first. However, deodorants always last me a while, so the price doesn’t bother me. I’d buy this again even if I got the same scent.

A few others I tried:
* Toms (terrible)
* Dove Natural (not natural at all and wouldn’t buy again)
* Primal Pit Paste (didn’t work at all for me and didn’t like using my finger to apply it)

Phew! Over to you! What are your favorite natural deodorants and why? Have you tried any of the above?

Little frustrated with the way you reviewed the Lume deodorant. It’s totally fine not to like it (I promise, I totally get it’s not for everybody!), but to not have read their FAQs to understood what it is, how it works, troubleshooting tips, etc. is pretty frustrating. It’s super different from most deodorants. I used to use unscented sensitive Schmidts with my husband and the buildup on his clothes got insane and it wasn’t as effective anymore.
In case this helps anyone else, here are some Pros and Cons for Lume.
    Pros:
-Pretty natural (3-4 ingredients I don’t love but I forgive them because of how well it works).
-Variety of scents. I like unscented and Jasmine Rose. My husband likes unscented, Silver Spruce, and Juniper Berry.
-Has no smell within 5-15 minutes of application.
-Really works on odor because it basically gets rid of the stinky bacteria.
-Lasts 72 hours for me in cold weather, 24 hours if I am exercising or sweating a lot (aka hot weather). Lasts 12-24 hours for my more active husband (he also has to wear synthetic shirts for work which contributes to needing to reapply more).
-Can apply just the right pea sized amount (half a pea per armpit) very easily with the tube version.
-Invisible once rubbed in (if you still see it then you overapplied).
    -No buildup on clothes.
-Can get a sampler with small sizes of each scent.
    Cons:
    -Price.
    -3 or 4 questionable ingredients.
    -Personally dislike Lavender Sage scent.
-Way different from other deodorants both in application and how it works, so initial learning curve.
-If you apply too much it isn’t as effective, don’t recommend the version that comes in a typical deodorant applicator.
-Unscented has a weird wet dog smell when it starts to wear off.
-Doesn’t have anything to absorb sweat (like most natural deodorants do, which is why they tend to cause buildup from oils/butters/powders).
-Not an antiperspirant (natural deodorants never are).
-May need to use an enzyme wash on old shirts or repeatedly wash/scrub pits of old shirts if there is buildup from previous natural deodorants. Synthetic materials really tend to hold odor so you may need to replace some of your wardrobe (regular deodorants tend to mask these odors).
-Scents may not work well with your natural body chemistry.

This is what I came to say! I was really happy with the tube application, not so much the deodorant style one. I tried the Juniper Berry first and liked it, but now I love the Jasmine Rose. It takes several weeks to really know if it’s working. It just gets better and better.

I was super curious about this post I’ve also been using Schmidt’s for a while now, and I also had it suddenly seem to stop working on me. I’m wondering if there was a formula change because my body hasn’t gone through any recent changes. I’m excited to try out some of your top picks. Thanks!

I use Origins No Offense and although it’s pricey, it works great for both me and my husband, who actually started using it first and raved about how well it worked, even on a deployment! At that point I hadn’t given up my Almay yet because I have super sensitive skin. He bought me my own and I have not gone back. I haven’t tried any other natural types because many contain coconut, to which I’m allergic, and from past sensitive skin issues to most deodorants I’ve tried. The Origins works great for us and lasts a long time making the price not so bad.

You HAVE to try PiperWai! It is a charcoal based deodorant that is completely natural. I’ve been using it for years and I swear by it, my husband now uses it too. It’s the only one I’ll use at this point, I teach hot yoga and it passes that test too! Piperwai is truly the best, it doesn’t leave any residue on your skin, smells amazing, lasts all day (and night) on your skin and the product itself lasts forever because you don’t need much to apply. There isn’t really a “transition period” for your body to detox from the other deodorants, it just works right away. They sell it in a jar and stick, I recommend the jar 100%- give it a try! http://www.piperwai.com

I use Native Coconut Vanilla and I absolutely love it. Not sticky, it works, nice smell, doesn’t stain your clothes. About the irritation after shaving. That happened to me also until I figured out that using Billie razors with the pumice edges was the culprit and not the deodorant. Now I use regular 5 blade razor blades on the pits and save Billie for my legs. No more irritation. And I love the Billie razors…just not on my pits. So yay for Native. I’m glad you liked it.

    I’m an Ex-Lume user.
In love with their first formula, and would buy that again in a heartbeat if they ever went back to it. But after they switched their formula it stopped working for me. I even followed all of their FAQ directions, and it still didn’t work. Their explanation after reaching out was to say that my BO had built up in my clothes so I needed to treat my clothes (with an expensive spray that they recommended, which is branded to get rid of pet odors… so now I smell, like a dog?). Okay, I got on board, it’s not totally unreasonable to think I have BO embedded in my clothes now, except I never had to treat my clothes when using the first formula, the smell would happen with BRAND NEW shirts, and even while treating my clothes, the deodorant only worked some of the time. It was too unreliable. Some days it worked, some days it didn’t – and when it didn’t, it REALLY didn’t. For the record, A few people in my close circle had this same exact experience, even trying the clothing treatments before switching.

I have since switched to Native, which I can confidently say, works just great WITHOUT treating my clothing with a very expensive special spray first. 🙂

They turned our armpits red and thickened the skin quite a bit after only a few days use. I currently use Love Beauty and Planet. I feel the need to reapply often but overall works well.

I had to give up on Schmidt’s, even the sensitive skin, because I had soooo much irritation. Someone suggested apple cider vinegar to help with the irritation and it did clear it up. Unfortunately, I had to continue trying that remedy every few days.Native worked okay , but I did some research and there’s some interesting information out there about avoiding baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). That caused me to try Smarty Pits sensitive skin, unscented. I sweat. I’m a runner, a winter sports enthusiast, and a rower and I work out daily. If you’ve never snowshoed, you don’t know what a sweat is! So far, I’m not over sweaty and no one’s complains that I smell! Sure, it’s cold here in winter, but I work in a school with no AC so it gets hot come summer. That will be my real test for Smarty Pits! I’m happy that I didn’t have a reaction to it.

Hi Erin. I’ve had a tough time finding a deodorant that cuts through my B.O. I use a lot of meds and perspire a lot but don’t want to use anti-perspirants. Tried something new this time a small container of a paste by a company called
routinecream.com I chose the sexy Sadie for fun and am very impressed. You only need a tiny bit and applied easily since you don’t need to get right up into the arm pit. I figure it will melt and spread which it does very effectively. I purchased mine from well.ca Last all day and they have many choices even unscented and I do not find the scent on this one overpowering. Just subtle enough.
It comes in 2 different sizes for all of them. So definitely a 5star rating from me.

My husband and I have used the Crystal mineral salt rock for 20+ years, and have zero desire to try anything else, so your post was a fun read. 1 caveat: you must apply immediately post shower, as it kills bacteria when it comes. Completely worthless to apply over already sweaty/smelly pits/privates. Pros: no scent, and not an antiperspirant so you get to sweat and not smell!

Schmidt’s and Native recently got bought out by Unilever- the same company that owns Dove and Secret- I wouldn’t be surprised if they changed the formula in the process (going from small locally owned business to large conglomerate had to include some recipe tweaks) That being said, I’ve heard numerous people complain about irritation from Schmidt’s, so that seems to be a common thing, unfortunately. The company I work for recently started carrying Sodawax deodorant- they all smell amazing and I just started using it the other day. Too soon for a full verdict, but if I remember I’ll come back in a few weeks with a review!

In the UK/EU (sob) in general, Nuud (nuudcare.com) is the rage right now for natural deos. My flatmate swears he can go for a sweaty run and it works well, and even the company says that it will last through showers for multiple days (something about the silver in it?!). My whole family has been using the Crystal stick for years–and that’s how long it is lasting! It takes a couple weeks before you notice your body readjust to being able to manage the underarm bacteria on it’s own so you have to “stick” it out at least a month to notice. After that, I never smell my armpits unless I’m on day 2 of no shower. I used to have stronger smells at a certain time in my cycle, and now, never. My husband started using it when he became very sensitive to his regular deodorant (he never used antiperspirants either) and enjoys it tremendously. As a back up, we do stock the Lavanila so I’m glad you found that one a fav. I like it’s smaller container to travel with.

Check out Crystal Rock deodorant sticks. Basically a chunk of salt you rub on a wet armpit IMMEDIATELY after a shower and lasts over 24 hours. It has worked better than any other natural deodorant I have tried (my sister in law, aunt and cousin as well). 1 stick will probably last a year and it is significantly less expensive than any other natural deodorant I have tried. It does not help with sweating, but you don’t smell. Highly recommend! And I have tried a bunch. Even made my own natural deodorant for awhile.

It’s a finger apply type one so you might not like it but I love trying new deodorants, provided they work! Thank you for posting a review of some you have tried.

I don’t think it’s actually “natural” but I’ve been using Secret aluminum free for about a year. It’s a clear stick so there’s no residue on my clothes and you no white stuff, etc. It comes in a few lightly scented options and it isn’t too bad! If I’m teaching several classes that day I may have to reapply once in between, but that’s really more for my own peace of mind than anything else. Anyways, thanks for doing this!

I’ve tried a ton of natural deodorants over the last few years. I’m a heavy sweater with sensitive skin so it’s been a challenge. baking soda irritates my pits for sure. Meow Meow Tweet works well, if you don’t mind applying with your fingertips. I like grapefruit. MagSol is great too (I like Jasmine), but I sweat through it pretty easily. Then on a trip I forgot to pack deodorant and had to buy some and the best option the store had was Schmidt’s charcoal magnesium, it has baking soda but works so well with smell and sweat. So I now do one swipe of MagSol followed by a swipe of Schmidt’s charcoal magnesium. That may sound silly but it works so well for me!

Thank you for the reviews Erin! I’ve been considering trying Native for a while now. Currently using Just.Ingredients natural deodorant. It works well for me and has minimal ingredients.

Thanks for doing this! I went through the same thing when I was breastfeeding. Found the native and love it but will try lavanila!

I’m glad you had good luck with the Lavanila! I’ve used this brand for years. They have several scents to choose from. The last couple times, I’ve purchased the Vanilla Earth one. I usually buy this from Amazon.

I love Green Beaver’s antiperspirant ( https://greenbeaver.com/en/products/aluminum-free-natural-antiperspirants/women-s-aluminum-free-natural-antiperspirant/bliss). I sweat a lot, and deodorant weren’t working for me (I tried lots of them!). My son uses their Tea Tree deodorant and it works well for him though.

Interesting to see your top 1 and 2 choices! I wondered about those. I live in Alberta, Canada and there’s a local company that makes what I think is absolutely the best deodorant and strongly encourage everyone to give them a try! Routine Deodorant – fun packaging and a nice range of smells/types. (Not affiliated with the company, just so thrilled to have found a product that works for my body.)

Never heard of them, but will look into it for sure! Fellow Canadian here, so I try to buy “local” as much as I can (that’s why I go with Green Beaver).

Thanks for all the reviews! I’m always surprised at how many natural deodorants irritate skin when the chemical-loaded ones don’t 🤔 I use Every Man Jack- Citrus, despite the name! It goes on smoothly, is effective, smells great, and is inexpensive compared to other natural deodorants.

    Hi Erin,
I use native and LOVE all the scents!! Did you know they have most of the same scents in a Sensitive Skin product as well? That is what I buy. Vanilla Chai is a great scent and one of their newest!
Thank you for your review of all the deo’s!!

Schmidt does leave residue on clothing but the scent is delicious! I’m currently using coconut matters and really like the slimline tube!

I, too, switched to natural deoderant along with most of my other personal care products. I tried several and liked the Native but am IN LOVE with Just.Ingredients. She is an Instagrammer mom who, for various reasons (you can learn if you follow her), touts
natural ingredients and decided to make her own natural deoderant. It is made with only a few, simple, organic ingredients and it has been amazing! Not sure if she ships internationally but, for those state-side, it is amazing. However, you cant’ buy it in stores. You have to get it from her website: https://justingredientswithkaralynne.com/. And follow her on Instagram if you are interestsed in learning how to swap out chemically-laden food and products for healthy, natural ones!

Does the LAVANILA in Pure Vanilla leave any residue?
I’ve been making my own deo for years and it’s the only thing that works for me (plus it saves money) but it leaves some residue in the summer when it’s very hot.
I use baking soda, corn starch, coconut oil, tre tree oil and sometimes I add beeswax from a local beekeeper.

I’ve been using Soapwalla for years. It is a bit more expensive then others but every time I try any other natural brands I’m disappointed. Either they don’t keep my sweaty pits dry, the smell weird and make my BO even nastier or they irritate my skin. With soapwalla I only apply once a day or sometimes every other day and a jar lasts a long time. I did however once try the sensitive version of soapwalla’s deodorant and was not a fan. Original all the way for me.

Did the sensitive skin disappoint because of scents or effectiveness? I tried the non sensitive skin Schmidts once and it worked great but my armpits were rashed out.

I’ve been using natural deodorants for about a decade, and I find it’s SO much a matter of “different ones work for different people”. For instance, I couldn’t stand Schmidt’s… it was gunky and thick and left such a residue on me! I personally find Tom’s of Maine to work very well for me (and I live in Texas!), but I know that it is completely ineffective for one of my friends. I think body chemistry is just completely unique and so it’s really a matter of trial and error.

Thank you for this post!!! I am currently using Lume, but it just stopped working for me. I am so grateful you tried all these and gave us your opinion. I can’t wait to try some of these. I was lost at what else to try and this article came at the perfect time.
