Gym Rat Journey: How This Girl Found Yoga
I’ll be honest with you: When I went to my first yoga class, I had no idea what to expect. I knew what it entailed, and I was ready and excited for a new challenge.
Starting as an Athlete
I’ve always been a gym buff and into sports. I played golf in high school and was lucky enough to play at a junior college, but things didn’t work out the way I had hoped. With that being said, I know I would have to find something to do to stay in shape. When one of my favorite professors told me to come join her aerobics class, I fell in love. I finally found a new workout that I could enjoy. This class was a place I could go to and take time for me to be myself while having fun and getting strong and powerful. And since I was finally getting back into a regular workout routine after a year and a half (I had been recovering from an injury from my junior year in high school), I was always excited to see what she had in store for us.
While the aerobics class did help me get back into shape (or better shape, I should say), I knew I had to do something different to go along with it.
My First Yoga Class
When one of my friends from high school started posting blogs and schedules for her yoga classes, I decided to give it a shot and go to my first yoga class with her.
Lexi welcomed me with open arms; not only did I feel accepted, but I never turned back. Lexi not only has a killer playlist, her classes are easy to follow and are super fun. I look forward to going to class every Sunday, even if it’s at the crack of dawn.
I remember her asking if I had ever done yoga before, and when I told her “no,” she was super excited. However, as the class progressed, she asked again if I was sure that I had never taken a class before. I reassured her that I hadn’t and that I’d only done some of the poses as stretches during my workouts.
I will admit that I never saw yoga as an intense workout. I couldn’t have been more wrong. My forearms hurt more after my first yoga class than when I tried racquetball for the first time.
Settling into My Practice
It’s been a little over a month since I’ve started practicing yoga, and I’ve never felt better. I’m learning to develop a new mindset on life and a new way of living. My sophomore year of college was rough for me, so finding new (and different) avenues for releasing that energy is more rewarding than anything.
Now, I may slack on getting my mat everyday (hey, I’m working on that! 🙂 ) but I’m excited to see where my yoga journey takes me!
