Stop Disease Before It Starts: A Gut Health Masterclass

Bad Yogi Fam, how are you! I missed you! It’s been a couple of weeks since you’ve heard from me, but I promise, the wait has been worthwhile.

This episode is unique. And it’s dense– in a good way. In the best way, actually. Today I’m talking with Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, a gastroenterologist and gut health expert. When it comes to gut health, “Dr. B”  is my go to source and after this, he’ll be yours too.

His Instagram account @theguthealthmd is filled with tips, research, & even recipes. Everything is science based, it’s free, it’s fun, and dare I say, it’s digestible 😉 But the best part about this guy is that he’s an actual doctor who graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Medicine and he’s not trying to sell you anything– he just does this because he believes in his message, and I thought there was something refreshing about his lack of agenda, ya know?

Now like I said, this episode IS a little different. Consider this a Masterclass in Gut Health rather than a traditional question/answer kind of thing (though I do ask him plenty).

In today’s episode, Dr. B does a deep dive into all aspects of gut health including talking in detail about…
– Celiac disease
– How the health of our gut microbiome impacts our likelihood of dealing with autoimmune diseases
– The problem with medical school and why doctors don’t generally focus on nutritional counseling as part of a treatment plan
– How to shift your perspective around food from guilt focused to health focused
– He waxes poetic about prebiotics and the different fibers you need to be getting, haha! 😉
– He even gives a few dead simple solutions you can try for acid reflux, gas, bloating, constipation, nausea, and other common complaints.
– I also made him tell me how to read your poop & what constitutes a “good” one.

We cover alllll of that and SO MUCH more, so grab something to write with because there’s a ton of information you’ll be able to put to good use from this one.

Loved the podcast – it’s exactly what I’ve been looking into for the last year or so, and it was nice to hear an expert reconfirm some of the things I’ve discovered for myself, but also add a lot more information and tips that I can incorporate into my life. There were a couple of books mentioned and I wasn’t able to jot them down , but I would be interested in finding and reading them. Could you please post the titles in a reply so that I can go hunt them down? Thanks so much and I’m totally looking forward to the 7 day challenge! 🙂

SO glad you loved it! The first book was here:
And the second was just the name of a researcher and that was Rob Knight! 🙂

    Hi Erin,

I just wanted to scroll back 10 seconds, but when I hit the scroll back button, I god right back to the start. Now I can’t seem to find a way to go back to the 35 minutes into the podcast (where I was). It seems I have to re-listen to the first part fully again. Please let me know if there is a way to scroll back/forward a bit in the podcast.

    Kind regards,

Hi Erin! So I have feedback and a question! First, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the podcast with you and Dr. B about Gut health, that was SO interesting and packed with good information! I listened to it while I was at the gym and every now and then had to stop to type a few things out in my notes. I signed up for the 7 day Master class and really have been enjoying those as well. I have been looking at gut health for a few years and I’ve familiar with some of the things that Dr. B covers but still have been learning a lot. My question though is this: I went and bought some Acacia Fiber after watching the video on prebiotics ( I live in Finland (American expat), so finding Benefiber is impossible). I’ve started using it this week, a 1/2 tsp in my morning black tea and that’s been great for gut purposes. BUT, I am getting this other side effect that has started happening to me in the past few years. I’m getting this phlegm reaction about 10mins after I’ve finished my tea since I started using the acacia fiber. Interestingly I’ve also gotten this reaction when I eat bread, usually those that have been heavily processed, and always when I eat fast food/processed meals even take out from places like Nepalese or Chinese places. I don’t eat these foods very often, maybe 1 or 2 times a month, but when I do, it’s there! I’ve been cutting most breads out of my diet to try and pinpoint this issue (so sad because I LOVE bread) but I still eat whole oats and don’t have this problem then. The phlegm starts just a few mins after I’ve finished eating and lasts about 30 mins to and hour. It’s really annoying, I feel like I am constantly having to clear my throat. Then it goes away! I’m trying to figure out if its a reaction to a preservative, or a wheat/gluten thing. I’ve had blood tests done for celiac/gluten twice and the result has been normal so I’m stumped! Doctors haven’t been any help beyond suggesting the celiac/gluten tests. Does Dr. B have any ideas what could be causing this in the Acacia Fiber? Thank you so much for these videos and that podcast, I have forwarded the link to many family members, it’s that good!
