Fake It Till You Make It: The Recipe for Believing in Yourself

One of my favourite pieces of advice to give to any new young professional (especially including myself) is to fake it until you make it. What does that mean, you might ask? To bring it back to basics: it essentially means that you should give off all the confidence of a full-fledged star until you (and everyone else) start to believe that you are, in fact, that star. When you start a new job, it can be frightening. In fact, you probably really don’t know what you’re doing. Everyone else seems to have their lives together, except you, right? You can settle into that “imposter syndrome” that plagues so many folks — I can attest to this.

But what you should realize is that everyone feels the same way! [tweet_dis]We’re all the stars of our own dramas.[/tweet_dis] By “faking it,” you can at the very least try to believe that you are qualified. Self-confidence has a weird way of seeping into all areas of your life, whether you mean it to or not. And suurprisingly (or not), it actually helps. Not even I realized how much I was holding myself back until I finally acknowledged that I was a good student and a hard worker. Not only did I start to act more confident at work, I produced better quality projects. This is sooo American of me to say: but I believe that working hard and believing in yourself are the cornerstones of success.

Henry Ford once said “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” I can’t think of a better quote. Accomplishing your dreams is all about believing in yourself. I think that, sadly, our current culture is full of uncertainty. We tell aspiring people that they won’t fully understand the extent of their success until later in life. That’s just not true! [tweet_box design=”default” float=”none”]You can be appreciative of your own efforts at the moments that you are making said efforts.[/tweet_box] Even if it means you “fake out” yourself, a healthy dose of self confidence can be as magical as Polyjuice Potion.

If you wanted to make said potion…
