5 Tips For a Mindful Makeover

Life seems to have lost its color. Things feel flat and you’re not even sure what you’re feeling. Sometimes you feel nothing at all and other times you want to burst into tears. You’re questioning your path in life. Maybe you don’t know what you want out of a career, relationship, or life in general. It may sound like a commercial for prescription drugs, but it’s actually a lack of mindfulness in your daily routine.

What exactly is mindfulness? We constantly hear the word, but many of us don’t know what it really is or how to practice it. It might sound like a strange concept that only the truly enlightened use, but mindfulness is necessary for every human being to find real happiness.

Mindfulness: a technique in which one focuses one’s full attention only on the present, experiencing thoughts, feelings, and sensations but not judging them.

Here are 5 tips you can use to give your life a mindfulness makeover:

1. People Watch

Before Iphones, Ipads, and Ipods drove us all I-crazy, we used to look up and watch the world go by. People could sit in a cafe, sip a drink, and people watch without the constant need to check notifications.

Leave your phone at home, sit in a cafe, and observe the world (even better if you can do it alone.) You might be surprised where your thoughts take you.

2. Read “The Artist’s Way”

One of my all time favorite books is “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. A 12 week course that will help you get in touch with your creativity, it’s also a book that will re-introduce you to your true self and help you realize some big truths along the way.

3. Free Write

If you can do it daily or weekly, free writing is the perfect way to work through your busy thoughts. Do you ever feel like your thoughts are racing so quickly that you can’t even keep track of them?

If your mind feels like a trash can full of annoying fruit flies, sit down and hand write 1-3 pages (or more!) of everything you are thinking. That means, no stopping to check spelling or criticizing anything you put on the paper, just write.

4. Have a Conversation With Someone New

Talking to strangers is a fantastic way to bring yourself into the present moment (but stay away if they have a white van or offer you candy.)

Making the effort to get to know someone you’ve never met peaks your curiosity and that is a fantastic way to be mindful of where you are.

5. Choose 1-2 Objects Nearby and Observe Them

Pretend you’re a really pretentious person in a museum, and study any object you see. What shape is it? What color is it? Does it remind you of anything?

The best way to be mindful is to truly observe the environment you’re in.

Mindfulness is an art that must be practiced, but with just a few small changes this state of mind can be obtained by every single person.
